Bold Architectural Garden in Coleorton, Leicestershire
Bold Architectural Garden in Coleorton, Leicestershire
We designed this garden in April 2025, and construction and planting was completed by May 2026. Now, three months in, although everything is still young, the garden is already settling nicely.
Our clients’ home is a bold, architect-designed statement dropped into a rural setting, so the garden had to complement that with something equally confident, then set the house into the landscape around it.
Water forms a central element of this design. Connected ponds and falls run across the paved patio area and down through several level changes, bringing splash and movement to soften the road noise that carries across this site.
Large-format concrete pavers from Schellevis cross the pond as stepping stones, leading out to the open space beyond and a spot for solitude at the far end, and Sofia Grey Mallet paving from Allgreen is used throughout the patio area near the house.
By far the biggest construction challenge was a manufacturing and installing a large multi-level steel pergola which descends a sloping bank and frames a floating concrete staircase and a paved seating area.
The planting mixes Hydrangea ‘Limelight’, silver birch, Echinacea, Helenium and Lythrum with ferns and hostas beneath.
Molinia, Stipa gigantea and Stipa tenuissima create movement, with splashes of orange from Achillea, Alstroemeria ‘Indian Summer’, Geum ‘Totally Tangerine’ and Agastache. Yew hedging divides the spaces and dogwoods will hold the colour through winter.
Our clients loved the concept on sight and asked for very few changes. They use the garden at every hour of the day, though golden hour framed by the steelwork takes some beating. The view from the sauna, out between the tree fern fronds towards the wider landscape, is another favourite.
