A Child-Friendly Garden
Our clients lived in a house in Derby with very large and scruffy front and back gardens. They came to us in August 2016 wanting to design and build both at the same time, but we advised them their budget was too small to achieve this.
We suggested they split the job into two – design and build the rear garden first, and put aside a separate budget for the front garden (which is now, just over a year later, being designed).
Our clients wanted a garden that was future proof – something that would suit the needs of a growing family for years to come. They needed the garden to be child-friendly and easy to manage, as they are a busy family with two very young children.
The most important aspects of the design were that we should provide space for the children to play, and space for the adults to entertain and relax.
We created the entertaining space by adding built-in seating close to the house, and also at the far end of the garden, next to a modern summer house. This created a destination, and also a different space to view the garden and make the most of the sun or shade at different times of the day.
The children can play in the two lawn areas, which are large enough to contain play equipment as the children grow. One of the children already enjoys playing with the low-level water feature that was built into the path.
Planting areas were kept to a manageable size. We included two built-in raised planting areas for ease of maintenance and installed a planting scheme to provide interest throughout the year.
Landscaping was by Robins Nest Landscapers in Derby.
