Country Garden Transformation in Milton, Derbyshire
This charming country property, recently refurbished inside, needed its outdoor spaces to match its fresh, modern interior. Both the front and back gardens were in desperate need of an update. The front garden, a mix of uneven grass and dated, winding paths, lacked practicality and appeal. The owners wanted a welcoming entrance with a “wow” factor, better access to the front door, and a private seating area to enjoy the evening sun.
The back garden is still under construction, but its transformation plans are already in place.
Here is the front garden before we started work.

Our Solution
We designed a front garden that combines elegance with functionality. Quality materials were carefully chosen to reflect the finishes inside the house. We specified some stunning landscaping materials from Quorn Stone and Arbour Landscapes – Dijon limestone and Bexhill clay pavers, laid in a timeless herringbone pattern, echoing the decorative brickwork of the property.
Significant changes in levels were smoothed out, making access to the front door easier while creating new planting spaces. These are now thriving with small trees, colourful perennials, and a yew hedge for privacy.
In addition to these updates, we focused on revitalising the stream area at the front of the garden. Overgrown shrubs were cleared, and planting was tailored to suit the conditions. Dry-shade-loving plants now bring texture and structure beneath the trees, while moisture-loving varieties add lush greenery along the stream’s edge.
A bespoke water trough, crafted by Caltef Designs, adds a unique focal point. Its acid-etched finish resembles aged lead, blending seamlessly with the garden’s classic yet contemporary style.
To complete the transformation, the driveway was refurbished with gravel-reinforcing grids, ensuring durability while maintaining a natural look.
