Designing a Shade Garden: Newbold Verdon, Leicestershire

No two landscapes are ever quite the same when undertaking garden design projects. Each presents its own unique set of challenges and opportunities. Such was the case when we were brought on to design a contemporary shade garden for a couple from Newbold Verdon in Leicestershire who wanted to transform their bland and overly sunny plot into a shaded entertainer’s oasis.

Right from the initial brief, we knew a creative solution would be needed to bring their vision to life. With a desire for clean lines, simple textures and soft plantings, the clients wanted us to balance contemporary and natural elements. They longed for designated spots to relax, dine al fresco, and one day soak in a hot tub, all shaded from the harsh sunlight. And with no need for a lawn, we had ample room to meet their requirements.

Creating a shade garden

We opted for a neutral palette of Pavestone pavers to pave the way for flexible furnishings. Straight paths embrace the shade garden’s rectangular shape while guiding visitors to its various zones. One path leads to a cosy lounge area under a timber pergola, where an egg chair by Quatropi perches alongside an L-shaped sofa, also by Quatropi.

The adjacent wall becomes an impromptu movie screen, with images projected from the pergola.

At the opposite end of the garden, an al fresco dining space lined with tall pots by Living Green stands ready to host garden parties and meals. An Alexander Rose dining table and bench make an elegant spot to enjoy dinner or drinks.

The planting establishes a graceful ambience with its lush greenery. Plenty of shady garden grasses and lush foliage mingle together in organic clusters. We were sure to incorporate shade-loving plants known for visual depth and interest. They add a finishing touch of softness to balance the garden’s sleek lines and surfaces.

To complete the landscape, a garden corner was left open for a future hot tub installation. All it will take is removing the egg chair and dropping a spa into place.

Landscape installation was by White Hawk Landscaping, and the garden was planted by ourselves.

What our clients said

Feedback from our clients confirms we achieved the shaded garden oasis they were hoping for. In their words:

“Our experience was excellent. You listened carefully to our requirements and designed our perfect garden and space. We now have a garden which we love and use all the time. We appreciated your understanding of what we wanted and just as importantly what we didn’t want.

Everyone was really friendly. The whole process has been a pleasure. Rory and Andrew were super helpful during the planting process. As non-gardeners we appreciated the planting guide very much, great information is included. You delivered everything we asked for and wanted, and we love our garden very much.”
