Duffield, Derbyshire: A Tropical Garden Design with Innovative Landscaping

Located in Duffield, near the Derbyshire Peak District, our client’s garden offered a unique opportunity. They wanted to combine a modern look with a tropical feel while making the space more private and practical. With a south-facing plot, they needed plenty of space for entertaining, a pet-friendly environment and a standout area with a BBQ and fire pit.

We ran into a hidden issue with groundwater during construction due to the heavy clay soil. To tackle this, we put in place some effective drainage solutions, which allowed us to move forward with our design.

To bring the tropical vibe to life, we carefully chose a mix of plants. Olive and Palm trees, pleached trees, and a variety of others like Hydrangea ‘Limelight’, Lavender ‘Hidcote’, and Calamagrostis ‘Karl Foerster’ turned the garden into a peaceful retreat.

At the heart of the garden, we created a welcoming space perfect for gatherings. A spacious artificial lawn is complemented by a Grillo outdoor kitchen and a Beefeater BBQ. The elegant London Stone Paving creates an excellent finish, while the bespoke pergola by Caltef Designs, a captivating Vistafolia green wall and the stunning water table from Adezz heighten the aesthetics.

This case study shows how we listened to what our client really wanted and tackled the challenges with a bit of creativity. We’ve turned this garden into a tropical retreat by combining natural elements with some clever design touches.
