Modern Family Garden in Hartshorne, Derbyshire
When the owners of this Derbyshire home asked us to transform their blank side garden, they had one clear vision – they wanted a space designed for pure enjoyment. Not a garden to look at through the window, but one to be properly lived in.
The plot had potential – wonderful countryside views and decent proportions – but precious little else. There were two patches of paving, soggy ground soaked by run-off from the next-door field, and a messy boundary hedge.
The Brief
Our clients gave us an ambitious wish list. A hot tub and sauna building. A covered outdoor kitchen with a pizza oven. A fire pit and a water feature, and a putting green – one of the clients is a golf pro. Space was also needed for football and basketball. All wrapped up in contemporary style with year-round colour and tropical planting for that ‘Derbados’ vibe.
Oh, and it needed to work for Denzel the sausage dog, who has strong opinions about gravel.
Our Solution
We started underground. Extensive groundworks from the installation team at Ground Services Landscapes diverted the field run-off and sorted the drainage properly – the unglamorous stuff that makes everything else possible. Then we created distinct zones across the garden, each with its own purpose but flowing naturally into the next.
We specified Jura Beige porcelain paving and DesignBoard composite decking from London Stone – both clean, contemporary surfaces that need virtually no maintenance. The garden features Corten steel elements from Caltef Designs, including a bespoke water feature, which warms the space without competing with the rural views.
The planting blends tropical drama with cheerful colour. Tree ferns and Trachycarpus create that holiday-abroad feeling near the sauna, while hydrangeas and Geum ‘Totally Tangerine’ pick up the rich tones of the Corten steel. Spring bulbs deliver early brightness, with Acers and Fatsias holding the structure through winter.
We tucked the putting green naturally into the lawn – professional enough for serious practice but relaxed enough not to look precious. Subtle mood lighting extends evenings well past sunset whilst respecting the dark rural skies.
The Result
This is a garden that earns its keep every single day. It’s a perfect space for large gatherings, quiet mornings with coffee and even competitive putting tournaments.
