South Normanton Garden Transformation

The Challenge

When our clients from South Normanton, Derbyshire, completed their home extension in 2021, they faced a garden that failed to live up to their new living space. The view from their extension windows revealed an uninspiring landscape that lacked structure and visual interest. They approached us needing a contemporary design that would not only enhance their outdoor area but also create a captivating view from inside their home.

Our Approach

We developed a design that strategically divided the garden using contrasting elements to create distinct zones while maintaining visual harmony. The plan incorporated:

• Contrasting paving and lawn areas to define different functional spaces.
• A subtle but striking water feature as a focal point.
• Carefully selected planting schemes to provide year-round interest.
• Architectural elements, including pleached trees at varying heights.

The Finished Garden

The project unfolded over approximately two years, with landscape installation expertly handled by Ground Services Landscapes. As well as designing the garden, our team personally oversaw the planting phase, ensuring each specimen was positioned to maximise visual impact and long-term success.

The planting palette included:

• Hydrangea ‘Limelight’ for its dramatic lime-green to white flower heads.
• David Austin Roses‘ ‘Young Lycidus’ roses for their rich colour and fragrance.
• Molinia ‘Transparent’ grasses provide movement and texture.
• Pleached trees at two different heights create architectural structure.

The look was made complete with high-quality garden furniture from Robeys Fireplaces and Urbis Design. These pieces complement the contemporary aesthetic while providing practical outdoor living solutions.

The Results

The transformation has exceeded our clients’ expectations. What was once an underwhelming outlook has become a view they actively seek out and enjoy. The garden now serves as a natural extension of their indoor living space.

They adore their new space – they love the colours of the planting and the colourful water bowl. The view from the windows is vastly improved, and the space is now so usable.
